Before we dive in, here’s a quick video that walks you through the exact process I’m talking about — combining shapes to create something completely new.
Ever design a logo and think,
“It’s fine… but it feels a little basic?”
You’re not alone.
Most of the time, that feeling comes from relying too much on what the computer offers. Software is powerful, but it can only remix what already exists.
Your brain, though?
It can combine ideas in ways no AI or design tool can.
And that’s where truly interesting logo concepts start.
One of my favorite techniques for breaking out of “basic logo mode” is incredibly simple:
✨ Combine two shapes into one new mark.
A feather and a paper airplane.
A leaf and a flame.
A star and a compass.
When you merge shapes, you create forms that feel custom, intentional, and way more original — the kind of marks clients instantly remember.
This is something computers struggle with, but your brain naturally excels at.
✏️ How to Try Combining Shapes in Logo Design
You don’t need to overthink this.
Here’s a simple, low-pressure way to explore shape combinations:
- Pick two shapes that relate to the brand or concept.
- Sketch each one loosely to understand their basic forms.
- Overlap or layer them to find natural connections or shared lines.
- Redraw it as one shape until it feels unified instead of “two things stuck together.”
- Refine in Illustrator once the foundation makes sense.
It’s fast, it’s fun, and it often unlocks ideas you would’ve never reached on the computer alone.
