AI tools like ChatGPT, Firefly, and MidJourney are making waves in the design world — but how are real designers actually using them?
To find out, I asked 40 professional logo designers how (or if) they use AI in their workflow. Their responses revealed a clear trend: AI is becoming a powerful support tool, not a replacement for creativity.
✅ Most Designers Do Use AI
Out of 40 designers, only 6 said they weren’t using AI at all.
That means 85% are actively integrating AI into parts of their process — but not in the way you might expect.

💡 AI Is a Creative Support Tool (Not the Creator)
The most common way designers use AI? As a support system. That includes things like:
- Brainstorming logo ideas
- Writing brand strategy copy
- Editing proposals and brand guides
- Doing early-stage research
Designers love that AI saves time on repetitive tasks — the stuff that drains energy but doesn’t require deep creative work.
There’s still some skepticism, especially about quality and ethics. But many designers — even longtime freelancers — are warming up to the idea of having AI as a tool in the toolbox.
And as tools evolve, so will the ways designers use them. The mindset is shifting from “AI will replace us” to “AI can assist us.”

✍️ Traditional Logo Design Is Still King
Even among designers who use AI daily, sketching and traditional mind mapping remain essential parts of the process.
Why? Because AI struggles with originality. It’s not good at coming up with brand-new ideas — especially in a world where logos need to be distinct, memorable, and strategic.
Multiple designers mentioned they would never use AI to create a logo from start to finish. Instead, they might use it to spark initial concepts or break out of a creative rut.
