Setting Up Your Workspace

InDesign offers workspace presets for a streamlined workflow.

  1. At the top-right corner of the InDesign window, choose the Typography workspace preset for optimal layout.

Understanding Frames in InDesign

Frames are essential in InDesign as they hold all your content, from text to images.

  1. Text Frames:
    • Select the Type Tool (T), click and drag to create a new text frame.
    • Type “VISIT” and select the Selection Tool (V) to adjust the frame.
    • Frames have handles that you can resize or reposition by dragging them.
  2. Creating Shape Frames:
    • Use the Rectangle Frame Tool to create a placeholder for images or other content.
    • You can also create Ellipse Frame Tool and hold Shift to constrain the shape to a circle.

Adding Color to Frames

  1. Strokes and Fill:
    • Select your frame.
    • Use the Swatches Panel to change the Fill Color and Stroke Color of your frame.
    • Adjust stroke width, alignment, and style (e.g., dotted) in the Stroke Panel.

Adding Images to Frames

  1. Place an Image:
    • Select your frame and go to File > Place to insert an image.
    • Adjust the image placement within the frame by holding the Target symbol (hand icon) and dragging the image around.
  2. Fitting the Image:
    • Right-click the frame, go to Fitting > Fill Frame Proportionately to automatically adjust the image within the frame.

Adding Text to Frames

  1. Placeholder Text:
    • Create a new text frame and right-click to Fill with Placeholder Text.
    • If you want to add text from a Word document, go to File > Place and select the file.
  2. Overset Text:
    • If you see a red X in your text frame, it indicates overset text. Resize the text frame to fit all content.

Working with Type

  1. Editing Type:
    • With the Type Tool selected, open the Character and Paragraph Panels to adjust type settings.
    • Adjust font, size, leading, kerning, tracking, and more for optimal text formatting.
    • Set paragraph settings like alignment, indents, and spacing.

Using Color in InDesign

  1. Swatches Panel:
    • In the Swatches Panel, you can select from a basic color palette or create custom color swatches.
    • Click on the three lines in the upper-right corner of the panel and select New Color Swatch to create a new color.

By following these steps, you will have a solid foundation in Adobe InDesign. Continue practicing with these basic tools, and you’ll be well on your way to creating professional designs. Be sure to download the practice files to follow along and perfect your skills.
