This tutorial walks you through the entire process — from downloading your font to seeing it show up live in your Character panel. And while you’re leveling up your design toolkit, grab the Logo Export Cheat Sheet + Template — it’s free and perfect for designers working in Illustrator every day.
How to Download Google Fonts for Adobe Illustrator
Head over to Google Fonts and search for the font you want. For this tutorial, we’re using Oswald.
Click the “Get Font” button, then scroll to the bottom of the page where your selected fonts are collected. From there, hit Download and your font will save as a zip file to your computer.
Once downloaded, double-click the zip file to open it. Inside, you’ll find one or more .TTF (TrueType Font) files — these are the actual font files your system needs.
How to Install Google Fonts on a Mac
Installing fonts on a Mac is quick and painless. Right-click the TTF file and choose “Open With” → Font Book.
Font Book is Apple’s built-in font manager, and it will give you a preview of the font along with an Install button. Click it, and the font gets added to your system font library instantly.
If you already have the font installed, Font Book will let you know — so no need to worry about duplicates. Once installed, the font is available system-wide, including in all Adobe apps.
Finding Your New Font in Adobe Illustrator
Now for the satisfying part — seeing your font show up in Illustrator. Open your Illustrator file and navigate to the Character panel.
If you don’t see it, go to Window → Type → Character to bring it up. Start typing “Oswald” in the font search field and it should appear right away.
From here, you can apply it to any text in your project just like any other font. No plugins, no workarounds — it just works.
Pro tip: After installing a new font, you may need to restart Illustrator for it to appear in the font list.
Adding Google Fonts to Adobe Illustrator Is Easier Than You Think
That’s truly all there is to it. Download the font from Google Fonts, install it via Font Book, and it’s immediately available in Adobe Illustrator’s Character panel.
This workflow works for any font on Google Fonts — not just Oswald. So the next time you fall in love with a typeface, you know exactly what to do. Adding Google Fonts to Adobe Illustrator takes less than two minutes once you’ve done it once.
