How to Convert a Raster Image to a Vector in Canva

If you’ve ever tried to scale a pixel-based image and ended up with a blurry mess, you’ve encountered the limitations of raster graphics. But did you know you can now turn those images into clean, scalable vector files — right inside Canva?

In this quick guide, I’ll walk you through how to use Canva’s Vectorizer app to convert any image into a vector and export it as an SVG.

Why Convert to Vector?

Vector graphics are resolution-independent, which means they stay crisp no matter how much you resize them. They’re ideal for:

  • Logos
  • Icons
  • Illustrations
  • Merch and printables

Step-by-Step: Vectorizing in Canva

  1. Start with a new Canva design
Head to Canva.com and create a blank design file in any size.
  2. Choose your image
Go to Elements > Photos and search for the image you want to convert. For this demo, I used a photo of a cute Chihuahua.
  3. Open the Vectorizer App
Select the image, click Edit, scroll down to Apps, and choose Vectorizer.
  4. Click “Start Tracer”
Let Canva do the work. You’ll see a live preview of the vector version on the left.
  5. Adjust your settings (optional)
    • Color Smoothing: softens color transitions
    • Curve Fitting: controls line precision (sharp vs. smooth)
    • Binary: converts your image to high-contrast black & white
  6. Add it to your design
Click Add to Design, remove the original raster image, and you’re set.
  7. Export as SVG
Click Share > Download > SVG. Pro tip: enable “Transparent Background” if needed.

🔐 SVG export is only available with a Canva Pro account.

  1. (Optional) Open in Illustrator
Want even more control? Open the exported file in Adobe Illustrator to refine paths or tweak colors.
