My Favorite Layout Trick for Clean, Balanced Design

Ever design something — a social post, flyer, landing page, or even a presentation slide — and feel like it’s technically “fine” but still doesn’t work?

The content is solid. The colors are on brand. The type is clean.
But it just… lacks focus.

In my experience, the missing piece is almost always structure.

Here’s the Layout Trick I Use in Almost Everything

I rely on one simple formula:
Divide the space visually using a photo and a color block.

This layout move instantly adds clarity, balance, and visual flow — no matter what kind of graphic you’re creating.

Whether I’m working on a social post, a print flyer, or a digital ad, I use this structure to give the design a clear sense of hierarchy and rhythm.

Sometimes the copy sits cleanly inside the color block.
Other times, it overlaps both the image and color — as long as there’s enough contrast to keep it readable.

Here’s a few examples:

Why This Layout Just Works (Every Time)

  • It creates structure — dividing the space sets up a strong foundation for your message
  • It directs the eye — contrast between image and color naturally leads attention where you want it
  • It gives flexibility — works across all formats: square, portrait, landscape, digital, print
  • It simplifies decisions — less guesswork about where things should go or how to fill space
