How to Design a Social Media Post in Adobe Illustrator: Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re looking to create professional, scroll-stopping Instagram content in Adobe Illustrator, this guide is for you.

In this tutorial, I walk through every step of designing a high-quality social media graphic — from file setup to export — using a layout technique I use in almost every design.

Step 1: Set Up Your Artboard

  • Open Adobe Illustrator and go to File > New. Start with the Instagram post preset: 1080 x 1350 px
  • Name your file for easy organization
  • Set color mode to RGB (for anything digital)

Step 2: Import and Organize Your Assets

Before I start designing, I bring in all the elements I’ll use onto the artboard:

  • Images
  • Logos
  • Text blocks (like event name, date, CTA)
  • Brand colors or palettes

I keep everything in view so I’m not digging around mid-design.

Step 3: Create the Layout

I split the design into two main sections:

  • One half is a photo (the “picture window”)
  • The other is a solid color block using a brand color or gradient

This creates a clear, balanced space for text — and gives the design structure from the start.

Here’s some examples of half photo, half color block layouts:

Step 4: Add Gradients and Overlays

To increase readability and depth, I add:

  • A soft black overlay on the photo using the Multiply blend mode
  • A brand-colored linear gradient for subtle interest
  • Adjusted angles and opacity to keep it clean

Step 5: Format and Style the Text

I include:

  • Bold, legible fonts for headings
  • All-caps subheads for visual rhythm
  • Smart spacing (line height, alignment, margins)
  • A clear CTA like “Register Today”

Pro tip: I align my type within the color block, or let it span both blocks when contrast allows.

Step 6: Repurpose the Design for Stories

Once you’re finished with the post design, duplicate the artboard and resize it to 1080 x 1920 px for an Instagram Story graphic. Then I adapt the layout — repositioning text and images to keep everything balanced in the new format.

Step 7: Export Your Design

I export using:

  • File > Export > Export for Screens
  • Format: JPEG or PNG
  • Resolution: 300ppi

This gives me high-quality visuals, ready for upload.

Designing in Illustrator doesn’t have to feel overwhelming — once you know how to structure your layout, everything else starts to click.

This step-by-step process gives you a solid foundation you can reuse and customize for any brand or campaign.

So grab the practice files, open up Illustrator, and design your next post with clarity and confidence.
You’ve got everything you need.
